When it comes to skincare, you’ll often hear me say that less is (most definitely) more. Some of the most basic steps anyone can do (aside from cleansing your face) is moisturise and apply a broad-spectrum SPF/ sunscreen. But Weiwei, what on earth do I do about eye cream I hear you cry?! Eye cream is often presented as key by the beauty industry to keep up a youthful appearance but many of us are left confused and in the dark. Is a dedicated eye cream really an essential or is it simply yet another marketing ploy to get us to purchase more product than we actually need, and will your normal moisturiser do?

Well, if you’ve been following me on Instagram @mybemora, you would have seen my Instagram post, you’d know that I’ve revealed a BIG secret. I used to be just like you! In fact, I didn’t use to think it was necessary, and (shock horror) I sometimes used to skip this step altogether and just used my face moisturiser instead! Since training as a skincare formulator, I soon realised that the short answer to this question is a big fat: YES.

SO, WHAT MAKES OUR EYES UNIQUE?

The skin around our eyes is, in fact, very different to the rest of our face and therefore has different needs and (you’ve guessed it) requires different products! Take dark circles for example. They’re a common concern that many of us want to address and they don’t tend to happen on any other areas of the face, so it would make sense that you’d need a dedicated product. The skin around the eye area is more delicate than the rest of the skin on the face meaning that it shows these elements more easily. It also doesn’t produce oil, so can be significantly drier and more sensitive to becoming irritated. The main goal of an eye cream is to brighten the eye area, reduce the signs of aging and delivering targeted ingredients to such a delicate area, whilst making sure to minimise any irritation.

In short, a good eye cream is specifically formulated for use on this specific area of skin.

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN AN EYE CREAM?

When looking for an eye cream, the safest option is to choose something that’s fragrance free and hypoallergenic to minimise any possible irritation given how close you’re applying it to your eyes.

The Nourish and Brightening SOS Eye Recovery Cream is a plant-based powerhouse. This pot of joy encourages collagen production to minimise fine lines and wrinkles whilst tackling dark circles through brightening and toning. How does it achieve this? A cocktail of fantastically efficient extracts.  Hyaluronic acid from snow mushroom extract: for plumpness and hydration, Hexapeptide 11 and Marine Algae to tackle the first signs of ageing, Prickly Pear extract to restore elasticity and finally, Cucumber and Green Tea extracts to soothe, heal irritation and reduce puffiness. This innovative formula locks in moisture and keeps it there to provide deep hydration and nourishment around the eye area. If that wasn’t enough, did you know it’s also 100% recyclable?!

HOW DO I APPLY IT?

Now, I promise you this isn’t a trick question, you can of course apply your eye cream of choice simply by gently dabbing the product around your eye area with your ring fingers and massaging in but now you have the option to really up your skincare game. If you’ve already seen our previous blog post you’ll already be clued up as to why including Amethyst in your skincare routine is a fantastic idea  BUT, just in case you’re new here, here’s a quick recap. Amethyst is part of the crystal family and each crystal is legendary for having its own energy and healing properties on the one hand, and physical and chemical properties on the other. So, no matter your level of scepticism Amethyst provides excellent skincare benefits.

Our Amethyst Facial Roller & Gua Sha Set will help to elevate your skincare experience. Using the Gua Sha specifically around the eye area can really reduce any unwanted skin texture and minimise puffiness around the eyes. You’ll notice that the Gua Sha is shaped a little bit like a love heart. Use the longest curve of the love heart to massage the under-eye area and depuff. Place the Gua Sha flat against the inner corner of the eye and use gentle pressure to sweep outwards towards your hairline. Repeat 3 to 4 times before moving the opposite side.
